Tap

Tap is a form of dance characterized by using one's shoes, as well as the floor, as a percussive instrument.  Two major variations on tap exist, rhythm tap and Broadway tap.  Broadway tap focuses more on the dance side and is widely performed in musical theater.  Rhythm tap focuses more on the musical side.

Tap began in the mid-1800s and incorporated both Irish Step-dancing and black slave dances, such as the Master Juba.  In the 1930s, tap dancing moved more toward the Broadway style and became very popular on stage and film.

Tap is a highly skilled dance form in which the knowledge of other dance styles benefits a dancer.  Students at A Step Above Dance & Music Academy follow our age-appropriate curriculum which teaches proper tap technique and vocabulary. We teach a mixture of Broadway and rhythm tap styles.

A Step Above Dance & Music Academy offers many levels which are based on age, technique ability, and the director's recommendation.  All of our tap classes are invited to perform in our annual Spring Performance.  Please contact our office to see which level will be best for you.

Beginning Tap is a 30 to 45-minute class for children 5-10 years old.  Class size is limited to 10 dancers.  Our Beginning Tap classes have 3 different levels based on age, years of experience, and director's placement.  These classes are traditionally-structured tap classes which work on basic coordination and sounds.  These levels also introduce tap terminology and movement.  The tap basic movement is introduced and students continue to progress in center and across the floor work.

Elementary Tap is a 45-minute class for children 9-12 years old and 0-3 years experience.  Class size is limited to 12 dancers.  These classes teach tap terminology and movement to older beginning students.  Classes are traditionally structured  and the curriculum is geared to incorporate the students into our intermediate curriculum.

Intermediate Tap levels are 45-minute classes.  Students are 8-18 years old and placement in one of our 4 levels is determined by the director.  Intermediate classes teach from our age-appropriate curriculum which enables the student to build their technique and tap vocabulary as they work towards more advanced work.  Students in these levels will work with many different styles.

Advanced Tap is a 45-minute class.  Placement is determined by the director only.
Students are introduced to advanced concepts and techniques of tap and movement for advanced development of their locomotive and sound isolation skills.
